Willow - History

This half term, we will be learning about the census records and, over the course of this unit, we will also be learning about the people who lived in Cannington and what sort of lives they led.

Today we looked at some census records and one of these was a very special census. It was the census of Queen Victoria. We were very surprised that, as she was the Queen, that she wasn't named as the head of the household on the census. This census helped us to realise that everyone needed to have a census filled in for them, even the Royal Family.

We will be increasing our vocabulary knowledge through subject specific words too. This week we looked at the eptymology of the words decade and occupation.

At the start of the lesson we noted down what we knew or thought we knew already about the census and at the end of the lesson we did the same.

We spent two lessons analysing the information found on the census' of Brook Street Cannington in order to reconstruct the villagers lives and ascertain what life was like for people living in Cannington in 1881, 1891 and 1901. We found surnames of people who still reside in the village as well as lots of different occupations ranging from agricultural labourers to people living off of their own means. We also noted that some families had servants and a larger number of rooms meaning that we were able to make inferences about people's wealth too.

We enjoyed being detectives and piecing together this information and even looked like detectives with our magnifying glasses!
